Travel FAQ

Frequently asked questions from our travelers

The hygienic conditions for processing and preparing food in Cuba are generally good, which means that the risk of catching dangerous diseases through food is low. Salads and freshly prepared cold dishes are also generally hygienic. Unlike in other Central American countries, you can buy and consume open lemonade or soft ice cream on the side of the road without worrying about infection. But here too, anyone who knows that they are sensitive to unfamiliar food should be careful. Even on our group trips, diarrhea occasionally occurs, as can be the case in any southern country. It is better to be cautious than to have a “ruined” vacation. Everyone knows themselves and their body best and knows what they can put it through.

For round trips within the country, foreign tourists primarily consider buses (Viazul), organized bus tours, but also rental cars, although bus trips are less problematic in terms of road safety.
Cuba is suffering from power shortages. In order to save electricity, power cuts are carried out, especially outside of the tourist centers (important for individual travelers!), which can also lead to disruptions in the water supply and communication.
Cubans require a permit from the authorities for any kind of private business. For this reason, and because of the risk of robbery, private taxis that do not belong to an official taxi company and are not marked accordingly are expressly warned against. Likewise, you should ask for official permission before staying in private homes (even if you are an acquaintance), otherwise both parties (host and guest) risk getting into trouble with the police.
Casas Particulares: In Cuba it is different from most countries in the world. A Cuban is not allowed to simply accommodate tourists in his house. To do this, locals in Cuba need a license. Anyone who acquires this license is allowed to rent out rooms in their house and call their home a “Casa Particular”. All Casas Particulares are registered and can be recognized by the white/blue sign on the outside wall. Here, as in every hotel, all travelers are noted. The families need your ID and your tourist visa for this. The state hotels are an alternative if you are looking for a place to sleep. But not for gaining an insight into Cuban culture.
Travelers should make copies of their documents and keep valuables in different places or in a safe.
It is best to avoid taking photographs of queues of shoppers, dilapidated houses, etc., as the people involved may react angrily. In addition, military facilities (restricted areas and buildings) and official vehicle convoys may not be photographed. Not all military facilities or restricted areas in Cuba are fenced off or clearly recognizable as such. Instructions or requests from guards and security personnel should be followed without fail.
Smoking is prohibited in enclosed public spaces (e.g. shops, cinemas, offices, taxis, buses). In restaurants, smoking is only permitted in specially designated smoking areas.
“Even if small quantities of drugs are found for personal use, drastic penalties can be expected. Possession of small quantities by foreigners is also punished as drug smuggling. The penalty for this is four to thirty years in prison, and in particularly serious cases the death penalty is imposed. For criminal prosecution following traffic accidents, see above under road traffic.
Visitors should refrain from political activity, as this can be punished with long prison sentences.”

Visa cards work best in Cuba and are available in almost every Cuban city. With a Mastercard you may have problems at the ATM, but you can definitely use them to withdraw cash at the bank counter (be careful: queues).

You can find the most detailed description of the regulations on the website of the Federal Foreign Office (https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/DE/Laenderinformationen/00-SiHi/KubaSicherheit.html). Here are the quotes on the most important topics so that you don’t have to search for long:

“There is an increased risk in road traffic due to the poor condition of the roads, a lack of lighting, unpredictable driving behavior and technical deficiencies (no lighting, brake failure, etc.). Cubans communicate in traffic partly through a system of hand signals that are initially incomprehensible to foreigners.
Drinking alcohol while driving is prohibited. Furthermore, the consumption of alcohol in the passenger compartment of a car, including for passengers, is prohibited. In addition, alcohol may not be carried in the passenger compartment of the car if consumption is obvious.
Accidents involving tourists that result in personal injuries can result in a travel ban lasting several weeks and possibly even pre-trial detention. If people are injured or killed, foreign drivers are sometimes given draconian prison sentences.
Nighttime travel across country should be avoided at all costs due to poor road conditions, unlit vehicles (such as cyclists and horse-drawn carriages), pedestrians and livestock on the road.
Rental cars in Cuba are often in poor technical and visual condition. When renting a rental car, you should pay close attention to the technical condition of the vehicle and document any previous damage in detail (with photos if necessary). There have been cases of tourists who were confronted with apparently unjustified claims for damages when returning the vehicle. The statutory insurance cover for rental cars offered in Cuba does not meet European standards. This is particularly true for the low amount of cover for personal injury. Taking out additional insurance in Germany should therefore be considered.”

To get a good overview of the entry requirements, travel and safety information for Cuba, we recommend that you visit the website of the Federal Foreign Office.

Entry for Germans, Austrians and Swiss (short version):

A tourist card is required to enter the country. The tourist card entitles you to a maximum stay of 30 days. Business travelers require a visa. The tourist card can be obtained from a Cuban foreign representation, such as an embassy or consulate, around 3 weeks before departure, or through us. You will also need:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay (a temporary passport is also valid)
  • Proof of valid international health insurance (in Spanish)
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Return or onward travel tickets
  • sufficient funds are necessary

Cuba is very safe for its residents and tourists. This is also because Cubans know how important tourists are for the economy in their country. However, we recommend paying attention to the following:

Don’t walk alone through completely unfamiliar parts of town. Valuables such as expensive jewelry, camera equipment, etc. should be carried hidden on your body or, ideally, left in the hotel safe, especially if you are traveling at night or in poorly lit areas.
We recommend that you also make a copy of your passport and leave all original documents, identification papers, flight tickets and large sums of money in the hotel safe. Fraud and theft are becoming more and more common, and occasionally robberies or violent crimes are also occurring.
For Cuban airports, we recommend carrying valuable items in your hand luggage.
You should also be careful in the event of a flat tire and at gas stations, as thieves take advantage of the distraction of vehicle occupants when changing tires or refueling to steal valuables and luggage unnoticed.
In principle, Cuba is a very safe long-distance travel destination. The country can be easily traveled on your own. Of course, the same rules apply in Cuba as when traveling in any other country. It is best to carry your wallet on your body. Valuables such as cameras and cell phones should be held tightly if you carry them openly. Always keep an eye on your valuables on the beach and be very cautious of hitchhikers who want a ride.

Do not carry all your cash with you, it is best to spread it out over several places on your body. The amount of money you are carrying should not be displayed. Just as in the big cities of other countries, more caution is required in Havana and Santiago de Cuba than in other areas. Since hurricanes or earthquakes can occur in Cuba, you should also pay attention to the regional weather forecasts and familiarize yourself with advice on what to do in the event of an earthquake.

BLOCKING EMERGENCY NUMBER: Germans can have their debit cards, credit cards, cell phones and some other electronic authorizations blocked using the blocking emergency number ++49 116 116. The caller is connected to the publishers of the respective media, provided they have joined the blocking emergency number. It is best to save the number in your cell phone. A list of the connected publishers can be found on the Internet at www.sperr-ev.de.
